About ServicePriceIntel
ServicePriceIntel exists to solve a persistent information problem in the home services market: homeowners have almost no reliable data about what they should pay, while contractors have all of it.
The Problem We're Solving
When your water heater fails, you call a plumber. You have no idea if $900 or $1,800 is fair. The plumber does. That information gap costs American homeowners billions of dollars per year in overpayments - and it falls disproportionately on people who can least afford it.
Where Our Data Comes From
Our pricing data is built on two primary sources:
- BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS): The Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys hundreds of thousands of employers annually to produce median and percentile wage estimates for every skilled trade in over 500 metropolitan areas. This is the most reliable source of regional labor cost data that exists.
- Contractor markup benchmarks: We apply industry-standard markup factors by trade type to convert labor cost data into consumer-facing price estimates. These factors account for overhead costs (insurance, equipment, vehicle costs) and reasonable profit margins.
Our data is updated quarterly. We are not affiliated with any government agency, contractor association, or service marketplace.
What We Are - and Aren't
ServicePriceIntel is a price transparency tool. We show you what the fair market price range is for a given service in your city. We do not:
- Connect you with contractors (we have no referral relationships)
- Guarantee any specific contractor's prices
- Receive commissions from service providers
Our only business model is data transparency. We believe informed homeowners lead to healthier, more competitive local service markets.
How to Use Our Price Data
Our price ranges represent what a legitimately operating, licensed, insured contractor should charge. The low end reflects simple jobs or competitive markets. The high end reflects complex jobs, emergency rates, or high cost-of-living cities.
If you're quoted significantly above our high end for a standard job, that's a signal to get more quotes. If you're quoted well below our low end, verify the contractor is licensed and insured before proceeding.
